Leon Uris - The Haj

SHEIK AHMED TAJI
Patience dries up oceans and erodes mountains.

We who have tasted the sweetness of life must also taste its bitterness.
But joy always follows sorrow, as bird follows the wind.
Sadness is only separated from joy by time.

Who cares? Well, maybe the Jews care. You know what they say.
The Jews are liberal. Take advantage of them.

Humanity was the last thing on the minds of the Syrians and Egyptians.
Perpetuation of hatred was the first, and in that they have succeeded.

Teamwork requires trust. There is no trust among us.
We pride in ourselves on our potency. In truth, we are impotent.

They also believe they can humiliate us out of existence.

However, no revolution has ever come from the Arab people, only coups, holy wars and assassinations.

What kind of perverse society, religion, culture . . . what kind of human being . . . is it that can generate such volcanic hatred . . . that knows only hatred, that breeds only hatred, that exists for hatred?

DR. MUDHIL
The Jews love one another. They will not tolerate fellow Jews living in such pestholes as Aqbat Jabar.

Islam is unable to live at peace with anyone. We Arabs are the worst. We can't live with the world, and even more terrible we can't live with each other. In the end it will not be Arab against Jew but Arab against Arab. One day our oil will be gone, along with our ability to blackmail. We have contributed nothing to human betterment in centuries, unless you consider the assassins and terrorists as human gifts. The world will tell us to go to hell. We, who tried to humiliate the Jews, will find ourselves humiliated as the scum of the earth.

ISHMAEL
In the brutal heat and poverty, it became easier to cope by finding some shade, seeing mirages, and allowing fantasy to enter and take over my mind.
